There are a few ways to reset the check engine light on a Cadillac.
Method 1: Turn the car on and off several times.
- Start the engine and let it run for one second.
- Turn the engine off and wait two or three seconds.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times.
- If the check engine light does not turn off, try method 2.
Method 2: Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Turn off the engine and open the hood.
- Locate the negative battery cable and disconnect it using a wrench.
- Wait one minute, then reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and the check engine light should turn off.
Method 3: Use a diagnostic scanner.
- Connect a diagnostic scanner to the OBD-II port under the dashboard.
- Use the scanner to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
- If the DTCs are related to emissions, clear them using the scanner.
- Start the engine and the check engine light should turn off.
Important:
- Before disconnecting the negative battery cable, be sure to turn off all electrical accessories in the car.
- When reconnecting the negative battery cable, be sure to tighten it securely.
- If you are not comfortable resetting the check engine light yourself, you can take your car to a qualified mechanic.
Note:
- Resetting the check engine light will not fix the underlying problem that caused the light to come on in the first place. You will need to have the problem diagnosed and repaired by a qualified mechanic.
- If you reset the check engine light and the light comes back on again, you may need to have your car’s emissions system inspected.
